Is the iPhone Built to Be Environmentally Friendly?

Environmental issues are recently on the spotlight. Many people are increasingly conscious of the need to throw away objects that are not eco-friendly. The need to use tech appliances that sustains the environment has also increased in discussions on reviewsbird.co.uk.

The need to ascertain if Apple products are environmentally friendly has been important. A list of energy companies’ reviews and feedback assert that the problem is not with the iPhone alone. The challenge extends to all smartphones which have a short lifespan. Every year, Apple announces that they produce an iPhone upgraded to be eco friendly.

This is within loyalty to the brand without any damages to other iPhone users. However, the upgrade in iPhone specification annually has not entirely reflected significant advances which limit environmental impacts.

Science has revealed some steps that could help in reducing the impact of the iPhone on the environment. The steps include repair-friendly hardware, a minimised packaging and making of durable accessories, choosing recyclable components, improvements in energy efficiency, reduction in the use of toxic and rare earth material, etc.

The company incorporated these, which makes them more environmentally focused than many manufacturers. Their data centres and retail shops are also powered by renewable energy with the use of recycling robots. Yet, what affects the environment from Apple products is more than these.

Manufacturing and mining iPhones has a huge impact on the environment. Apple says that 74% of carbon emissions are from manufacturing and only 19% of emission is from the use of its products. They add that they are taking steps to reduce their use of rare earth materials and toxic elements in their production of the iPhone.

However, a critical look shows that rising carbons are demonstrated in the production stage. This means from the mining of raw materials to the final production stage, there is an emission of carbon.  That is, if iPhone users were to use the phone for a long time, it will offset the carbon emission. And this is why users pick up new iPhones as soon as they have a challenge with the previous phone.

It has also been asked if iPhones are made to last long. There are different multi-million dollars’ lawsuits against Apple to bring them into public transparency in how they produce their devices. The build of obsolescence in Apple’s products negates their claims of environmental sustainability. This makes the company’s operation risky for the planet.

The glass design makes iPhone products very slippery. They’re thus susceptible to cracking and expensive fix although the glass design arouses a premium feel. Perhaps, the ambitions of Apple have facilitated their continuously wrong decisions in enhancing eco-friendly tools and environmental sustainability.

While iPhone devices are more equipped by enhanced processors than their rivals’, the device has an easily degenerating battery. The products are not repair-friendly, which answers why users pick up new devices when their phones suffer physical damages.

The concern about the possibility of eco-friendly Apple products has been talked about for a while now. While the possibility is slim, upgrading the products could help. But to use an eco friendly product, many people have advised a halt in the use of iPhones.
